Historical Significance
The Kentucky Derby is the longest-running horse race in the United States, first held on May 17, 1875. Inspired by England’s Epsom Derby, Colonel Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr. established the race after visiting Europe and studying prestigious horse racing events.
